SPIKE WITWICKY - The son of Sparkplug and one of the earliest human allies of the Autobots in the G1 timeline (the only timeline that matters). Throughout the progression of the G1 timeline we see Spike change from rebellious teenager to a happily married man and also a father to the next annoying brat in the story replacing him. His son Daniel. We get to see Spike fully grown in the Transformers 1986 movie (the only good movie, Michael Bay sucks) and also a bit in the Japanese G1 timeline series, Headmasters. Today we have him in his iconic Exo-Suit. Let's take a look at it now.

The Box

I have not bought a basic (they call it core class these days) figure in a very long time. They are suppose to be in the lower end bracket of the toys. As a more affordable alternative to the bigger ones. They also no longer come in a blister card packaging but instead in a full on box. I'm guessing this is to make it more  collector friendly and also use less plastics in the process hence saving the environment and cut cost on the packaging. There is an uncovered window on the box so you can actually touch the figure inside, but this also presents a danger as less than upstanding people could just pull the figure out of the box with enough effort and force.

Other than that it features the usual packaging stuff, product shots, art work, legal mumbo jumbo etc

Exo Suit Mode

Spike is roughly 3.5 inches to the top of his "dome glass helmet" so I'm guessing that's about G.I Joe size? Its what I would call a good enough representation of what you saw in the movie. Details on the suit is decent with gold, red and light grey on the chest plate. Mixed with light grey and white on his limbs. His head can turn via a lever on his back. The head, well the hair and skin is painted on, but the face detail is sorely missing and he has a GIANT HOLE at the back of his head. I have no idea why it is that way but it is rather disturbing (major horror movie vibes) and takes away a bit from the figure.

Accessories

Spike comes with 2 energy effect parts. That can be used in both modes. Not sure if this was a cost cutting move on Hasbro/ TakaraTomy's part but these came wrapped in white paper in the box.

Side note, there is also a hole on his back where you can plug in a stand like you see in the pictures.

Vehicle Mode

Vehicle mode is basically Spike lying face down with his suit arms folded to the back and legs slightly retracted by folding the knees, turning his helmet around a bit and turning the legs the other way. Eehhhhhhh, it's cartoon accurate I guess. It's not terrible, I mean the suit didn't transform into an accurate car of any kind in the movie either. So for what it is, it does it's job. You can plug the effect parts to the ports on his arms and you can have them either as a turbo boost or as weapons by turning them around.  Too bad he can't face forward like the Masterpiece version.

Conclusion

Does he get the job done? - Yes

Does he look good? - Yes

Is he the best spike in this scale? - Yes (he's also the only spike in this scale)

Is he fun to mess with? - Yes

Does he spark nostalgia and Joy - Yes

So despite a few things that are a bit off putting i.e unpainted face and GIANT HOLE at the back of his head. He is still good for what you pay for. In Some ways it's superior to the Masterpiece version even.

So I'm giving it a comfortable 6.5/10
